what is dry cleaning?

the dry cleaning process

Dry cleaning is a cleaning process used to clean delicate or sensitive fabrics and garments that cannot be effectively cleaned using water-based methods, such as washing machines. It involves using a specialized solvent to remove dirt, stains, and odors from clothing and other textiles.

The term "dry" cleaning is somewhat misleading, as it does involve the use of a liquid solvent. However, unlike traditional laundering, water is not used in the process. Instead, the clothes are immersed in a solvent that effectively dissolves oils, greases, and other types of stains.

The dry cleaning process generally includes the following steps:

  1. Pre-Treatment: Stains and spots are treated with specialized solvents or detergents to help loosen and remove them.
  2. Cleaning: The clothes are placed in a machine resembling a large washing machine. The machine rotates the clothes in the solvent, effectively cleaning them. The solvent dissolves and carries away the dirt and stains.
  3. Drying: After cleaning, the clothes are dried using warm air. Any remaining solvent evaporates during this step.
  4. Finishing: The clothes are then steam-pressed or ironed to restore their original shape and appearance.
  5. Inspection: The clothes are thoroughly inspected to ensure that stains and odors have been removed. Any remaining issues may be addressed before returning the clothes to the customer.

Dry cleaning is especially useful for fabrics that may shrink, lose color, or get damaged when exposed to water and agitation, such as silk, wool, and delicate fabrics with embellishments. It's commonly used for formalwear, suits, dresses, and other high-end clothing items.
